Children's Ministry Assistant/Nursery Coordinator
Summary of Position: Provides a safe, caring and nurturing facility and atmosphere to the church nursery facilities at the FUMC Pearland Campus. Serves as the assistant to the FUMC Pearland Campus Children’s Ministry Director, and is supervised by the FUMC Pearland Campus Children’s Ministry Director. Additional responsibilities include reaching out to parents of nursery-aged children and ensure their awareness of the opportunities available within our church nursery.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Serve as the Assistant to the FUMC Pearland Campus Children’s Ministry Director
a. Coordinate nursery plan for major church events (e.g. VBS, GIFTS Camp, Christmas Eve, Christmas, Easter, Be the Church), as confirmed during Tuesday staff meeting when the Church Event Calendar is reviewed
b. Coordinate FUMC Pearland Campus nursery Sunday School curriculum with Children’s Ministry Director to ensure consistency, as appropriate, with Sunday School curriculum for Elementary school-aged children.
c. Support and attend Children’s Ministry Council
d. Partner nursery communication / outreach to parents / families (e.g. monthly email) with Children’s Ministry Director to ensure consistency
2. Maintain a safe and appealing FUMC Pearland Campus nursery
a. Make sure that all nursery rooms are staffed appropriately according to room size and number of children with respect to city occupancy codes and Safe Sanctuary Guidelines.
b. Conduct frequent spot-checking in the nurseries to make certain all programs are running smoothly
c. Resolve issues with parents and staff on nursery related problems. Notify Children’s Ministry Director of any possible issues.
d. Order supplies i.e. (diapers, toiletry items, toys, and other related nursery items)
e. Secure and distribute nursery Sunday School lessons for caregivers to have during sessions
f. Set up training sessions for nursery staff to keep them current. Maintain records of nursery staff training and dates.
3. Manage day-to-day nursery activities
a. Nursery Coordinator will be responsible to make sure the registration system is operational every Sunday Morning.
b. Be present and visible for church visitors Sunday morning from 8:00am-12:15pm. The Sunday Morning Time is required to make certain the nursery is prepared, running smoothly and properly staffed, and to greet parents and assist in their use of the check-in system.
c. Manage a nursery calendar and coordinate staffing schedule with nursery staff. Coordinate with FUMC Pearland Campus and Redeemer Campus Offices for upcoming church functions, church services, and other nursery support requests.
d. Assemble and distribute nursery “welcoming folders” (ordering bag tags, labels, and baby Bibles) for new church members.
e. Approve and submit nursery employee timesheets.
f. Identify which nursery employee is the lead and “in charge” when Nursery Director is not on-site, and communicate this to other nursery employees. Ideally this would be consistently the same person, but can vary as needed and appropriate.
4. Manage long term nursery plan
a. Coordinate with Children’s Ministry Director on organizing and recommendations on the nursery growth and room needs
b. Oversee and recommend annual nursery budget to Children’s Ministry Director
c. Recommend and dismiss nursery employees with concurrence of Children’s Ministry Director.
d. Plan and host bi-monthly staff meeting with nursery staff to review upcoming events, discuss expectations, etc.
e. Conduct annual reviews with individual nursery staff to evaluate their performance, confirm expectations, understand their long term plans and job satisfaction, etc.
5. This job description is not all-inclusive and can be modified verbally or in writing by the FUMC Pearland Campus Children’s Ministry Director, the Church Administrator, the Senior Pastor, or his/her designee.
1. A love for and patience with children
2. Above average supervisory skills, ability to lead the nursery with little direct supervision
3. Dedicated church person (not necessarily a member of FUMC).
4. Ability to clearly communicate verbally and through written correspondence (with staff, church members, and vendors)
5. Safe Sanctuary certified.
6. Knowledgeable in office protocols.
7. Demonstrable familiarity with computers and office software
Working Conditions: This is currently a part-time hourly position estimated at 20 hours per week. Core weekly hours for the Nursery Director to be on-site in the nursery include: Sunday mornings from 8AM to 12:15PM (Sunday morning church services), Monday mornings from 9AM to noon (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers – MOPS), Thursday, and other days/hours as may be deemed necessary per ministry needs.
Directly accountable to Children’s Ministry Director, and indirectly accountable to the Church Administrator and Senior Pastor.
